Ingredients
- For the Filling
8-10 apples (regular apples, cooking apples or pears are great too)
Add other fruit also if you wish
2-3 tbsp Sugar (usually only needed if using cooking apples on their own – pears are usually very sweet)
- For the Crunchy Topping
60g Brown Sugar
65g Wholemeal Flour
160g Oats
10g Sesame Seeds
20g Sunflower Seeds
35g Pumpkin Seeds
30g Chopped Walnuts
125g Butter
Directions
- Peel and slice the apples (and other fruit if using) and put in a saucepan with a very small amount of water.
- Cook until the fruit is soft, stirring regularly and adding very small amounts of water if needed to stop the fruit sticking or burning.
- Add other fruit like raspberries if you wish, when the fruit is almost ready.
- Sprinkle with sugar – adjust according to the sweetness of the fruit. The less sugar the better. You may not need any!
- Put the fruit in a casserole dish.
- Add sugar, flour and other remaining ingredients except the butter to a mixing bowl and mix it together with your fingers until everything is well mixed.
- Chop the butter into small pieces, add to the crumble mixture and use your fingers to work it all together.
- The crumble mix will go quite “sticky” when it is mixed properly. Spread this over the top of the fruit.
- Bake in a pre-heated oven for 20 minutes at 190C and then reduce to 170C for a further 30 minutes. Remove from the oven after the first 5 minutes of baking and smooth the crumble with a fork. This will give the butter a chance to soften and will allow you to spread the mixture a little better.
- Once the baking is complete, brown under the grill for a minute or two for extra crunch if you prefer.
- Serve on its own, or with custard or cream. Delicious hot or cold!
