Ingredients
575g Plain White Flour
575g Coarse (or very coarse) Wholemeal Flour
800ml Buttermilk
2 tsp Bread Soda
2 tsp Salt
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 230°C.
- Mix the flours and sieve in the bread soda and salt into a large mixing bowl.
- Make a well in the centre and add the buttermilk. Using your fingers, slowly bring the flour into the buttermilk and mix it well around.
- The dough should start to come together and not be too wet. Form roughly into a ball and turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
- There is no need to knead the dough, but form it into a rough circular shape and immediately transfer to floured baking tray.
- Use a sharp knife to score across horizontally to create a cross shape (defining the 4 farls), about 1 cm deep.
- Place the bread in the oven at 230°C for 25 minutes, then turn down to 210°C for a further 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack.
